“Once you add a trophy into the mix, these guys see blood and go all out.”
That statement from Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach Danny Roy reflected the extra excitement and energy as the team’s 4th Annual GCU Kramer Cup intrasquad scrimmage came to a conclusion at AZ Ice Arcadia in Phoenix. The Lopes again broke its entire roster into two randomized teams, but this time, the teams were named after Lopes’ current team captains Kory Potach and Ethan Prater, and the prize was officially unveiled: a shiny, silver trophy.
The teams were tied, 2-2, until late in the 2nd period when freshman forwards Niko DiNunno and Tyler Parsons scored back-to-back goals to give Team Potach a 4-2 edge going into the 3rd period. A solid strike from Team Prater’s Joe Kuzminski cut the deficit to a goal, but Team Potach silenced the comeback with three straight goals to seal the victory.
“The winning factor was us coming together and truly playing as a team,” said Potach. “It was so awesome to raise that trophy at the end of the game.”
Team Potach’s name will be engraved on the Lopes’ team trophy next to all the past years’ Kramer Cup winners.
