Selection camps set for GCU men’s, women’s ice hockey

July 6, 2017

The Grand Canyon University ice hockey seasons are near, which means the programs’ selection camps are even closer.

The Lopes men’s ice hockey program, which will have two teams, and the Lopes women’s ice hockey program, which will debut in 2017-18, are staging free selections camps in the first week of September for any GCU student who is interested in playing this year.

Camp participation is required for those who want to play during the 2017-18 season. An informational meeting for the men’s and women’s programs will be held on campus Sept. 1 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Coach (Natalie) Rossi and I want to encourage any GCU student who is interested in playing hockey to come out to the camp and see what the program is about,” GCU men’s ice hockey head coach and director of hockey operations Danny Roy said.

The four-day GCU men’s selection camp will be held Sept. 4-7 at AZ Ice Peoria, the GCU home facility located at 15829 N. 83rd Ave. in Peoria. Each day of the camp will have two sessions with Sept. 4 going from 11:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. and 12:50 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. while the Sept. 5-7 sessions will run from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The three-day GCU women’s selection camp will be held Sept. 5-7 with one daily session that starts at 3:30 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m.

Each program will stage an intrasquad Purple vs. Black Game at AZ Ice Peoria on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.

To be cleared to participate in the GCU selection camps, each player must complete a physical exam and an Athletic Trainer System profile. Players must bring equipment for participation in the camps.

The Lopes’ ice hockey teams will be begin their regular seasons at home Sept. 22 and 23 against Arizona State.
