It is no wonder that Grand Canyon University men’s lacrosse is in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference championship game Sunday, given how the conference’s honors played out for the 2017 season.
GCU won each major individual award and placed five Lopes on the all-SLC first team.
GCU coach Manny Rapkin won SLC Coach of the Year for the second time with the Lopes. Rapkin, the Lopes’ head coach since 2011, has guided GCU to a No. 1 national ranking in the Under Armour Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association coaches poll.
Senior attacker Joe Balestrieri was named SLC Offensive Player of the Year and sophomore long-stick midfielder Jack Lamey was honored as SLC Defensive Player of the Year.
Of the 13 spots on the all-conference first team, five of the selections went to Lopes players:
- senior defenseman Brandon Suchand
- junior goalkeeper Alex Larson
- sophomore midfielder Jordan Vicente
The Lopes also placed two players on the all-conference second team:
- senior midfielder Austin Ekeroth
- sophomore attacker Cam Wengreniuk
