Phoenix, Arizona – September 6, 2017 – Commencing their 2017-18 season against a pair of nationally respected junior college programs, the Grand Canyon University women’s club soccer team dropped a pair of matches in the Fiesta Henderson Soccer Invitational Tournament in Henderson, Nevada. The Lopes opened up the season Thursday with a 4-0 loss to Utah State University-Eastern, then wound up their tournament play a day later with a 5-2 loss at the hands of Otero Junior College from Colorado.
The Lopes first action of the tournament-hosted by the College of Southern Nevada-saw them go toe-to-toe with a team just outside the national junior college rankings, USU-Eastern. Both the Lopes and Aggies refused to give much ground in the first half as USUE took a 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room. However, the Lopes ran out of the steam in the second half as the Aggies scored three goals over the final 22 minutes of play. “They are still learning their roles and responsibilities on the field,” said Lopes’ women’s soccer club head coach Erin Reinke. “They did it well for 30 minutes of the game.”
On Friday, the Lopes’ offense broke through twice against Otero, with sophomore Rachel Macrame scoring first goal of the season on an assist from freshman Madison Quan. Lopes freshman Kasey Butrovich tacked on another GCU Club goal in the 5-2 loss.
The Lopes now have a full week to get prepared for their next matchup as they travel across town to Tempe to square off against the Arizona State Sun Devils club team. The Lopes 2017 home opener will be Saturday, September 30, as they host Northern Arizona in a 1 pm matchup on the GCU campus.
