The Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey team faced off in the second installment of 2021 intrasquad scrimmages at AZ Ice Arcadia in Phoenix. The squad again split the entire roster into two teams (GCU Black vs. GCU White), and GCU Black kept their 2021 record perfect with a 7-4 win.
GCU Black ran away with the game through the first two periods, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. GCU White then mounted an impressive comeback in the last period, cutting the deficit to a single goal at 5-4. GCU Black sophomore forward Kory Potach had other plans, though, notching two goals in the final six minutes of the match to cement the GCU Black victory.
“These practices and scrimmages are great for knocking the rust off,” said Lopes’ freshman forward Justin Rudyk. “With a little more time, the team will be in top shape.”
The Lopes have been working to get into shape and refine their skills since the new year, and their improvements were evident in this scrimmage to their coach.
“Things are looking smoother out there,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Danny Roy. “Week after week, these guys are elevating their game and getting better.”
The next intrasquad scrimmage game takes place at AZ Ice Arcadia on February 26 at 6:30 pm.
