Winning never gets boring.
Any doubt that complacency might start to kick in was eradicated last weekend when the Grand Canyon University Women’s Rugby team defeated University of California-Los Angeles, 62-0. The Lopes improved their record to 5-0 with two more matches remaining in the season. This was the third time this year that GCU was able to hold their opponent scoreless.
Two major players that contributed to the team effort were Lopes’ Outside Center Julian White, who completed a hat trick, scoring three tries; and Lopes’ Flanker Kat Lazante, who was a true defensive force and led the team in tackles.
Even in a blowout win, Lopes’ Head Coach Alison Price discussed different aspects the team needs to improve on moving forward.
“We need to get better strategically,” said Price. “In situations where the other team is called for a penalty, we need to be able to capitalize more effectively.”
Both the Lopes’ coaches and players credited GCU’s stellar Division 1 season debut to remaining true to their team effort playstyle.
“We expected this was going to be a physical game,” said Price. “UCLA is a very strong team, especially in the scrum, but we didn’t change our style of play. Even if we are up by a clear margin, we stay true to ourselves, and the team never loses drive.”
The next outing for Grand Canyon is this Saturday in a home match against The University of California-San Diego. This will be the final home game of the season for women’s rugby and will be held at the GCU Practice Soccer Field. Match time is at noon, and admission is free!
