A new season, a new tournament, and new opponents – the likes of which the team has never seen. That was the story line for the Grand Canyon University Women’s Rugby program as they competed in the Scrum by the Sea Tournament in San Diego, California last weekend.
The team put on an absolute clinic as they swept their four opponents, including posting shutouts of University of Arizona (27-0) and University of California – Los Angeles (22-0). In the other two matches, the Lopes defeated University of California Davis, 15-5, and the hosts from University of California San Diego, 25-5.
The program has yet to suffer a loss during their fall season, but an undefeated record was simply an afterthought to Lopes’ Back Natasha Opoku.
“I want us to be national champions,” said Opoku. “We had some pre-tournament jitters, but we pushed extremely hard, and we’ll just take everything one step, one game at a time.”
Opoku’s position is responsible for being one of the primary pass catchers of the team. With such a demanding position revolving around running, Opoku says she can still get better.
“I definitely want to put more work into conditioning,” said Opoku. “We need to continue working on the newer plays. We have a high standard for ourselves, but the whole team pushes each other, and I love my team for that.”
The team will cap off their fall season with a Veteran’s Day battle against the University of Arizona this Saturday afternoon in Tucson. After the final fall match, the team will begin preparations for the spring season.
