GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Women’s Rugby team will host the Gold Coast Conference Intercollegiate Rugby (GCCIR) Division I Playoffs this Saturday and Sunday, March 24 and 25, on the GCU campus. The Lopes – who will sport the only undefeated (6-0) record in the field – will host the University of California-Santa Barbara, Cal-State University-Northridge and Arizona State University as part of the two-day, four-team tournament. All four matches of the tournament will be played at GCU Stadium.

The top-seeded Lopes will actually commence tournament play on Saturday morning with a matchup against the 4th-seeded ASU Sun Devils, who became the final team to qualify for the tournament this past weekend with a win over the University of Arizona. This was supposed to be the second time this season that the two teams would see each other on the pitch, but the Lopes were credited with a 28-0 forfeit win after ASU was forced to forfeit the January 27 matchup. That match will be followed Saturday afternoon with the semifinal matchup pitting 2nd-seeded UCSB and 3rd-seeded Cal-State Northridge against each other for the second time this year (UCSB won the first meeting February 3rd). The losers of the semifinal-round will then face each other Sunday morning, with the winners of the two matches finishing off the weekend Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm with the championship match. The winner of the tournament earns the right to advance to the Division I Women’s Rugby Spring Nationals at a site to be determined in mid-April. The championship match’s runner-up may also advance with an at-large bid, which would be determined later.

With the fact that they’ve allowed a stingy 36 points and scored a league-high 304 in their six matches, the Lopes come into the postseason as heavy favorites to advance to nationals, but know that their last regular season test, a 19-12 win at UCSB, showed them that they aren’t infallible.

“We try to stay humble and hungry,” said Lopes’ Co-Head Coach Daniela Mogro. “We knew that that win would be a tough one-no matter what. UCSB is more experienced, and has been one of the strongest teams in the conference for a while, so we respect them-along with all of the teams in this playoff.  We know what we can do, and if we stick to being true to ourselves, then we’ll achieve the outcome we want.”
