In only their second win of the season, the Grand Canyon University Women’s Lacrosse team made program history.

Bouncing back from a loss to Colorado State University on Friday night, the Lopes won a tight 11-10 victory over Arizona State University Sunday at the ASU West Campus in Glendale. It’s the first win in GCU Women’s Lacrosse history over the Sun Devils, and ups the Lopes’ overall record to 2-6.

The Lopes put the pressure on ASU early, scoring five goals from five different players to tie up the score at halftime. GCU continued the relentlessness into the second half, taking an 11-8 lead with four minutes left. The Sun Devils answered with two quick goals in the final minutes to get within one, but the Lopes held them off from there.

“I think Friday’s game gave us a reason to think about what we need to do better to be successful,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Tracy Gallihugh. “The team was able to learn from their mistakes and come more hyped, positive and determined to win Sunday’s game.”

Rachel Ware led the Lopes with three goals, while freshman midfielder Casey Scanlon added a goal, four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Colorado State led from the outset, building a 13-5 lead at halftime, but the Lopes kept up with the Rams’ pace in the second half. Paige Loeffler once again led GCU’s attack with three goals, five ground balls and forced two turnovers. Midfielder Grace Conti added two goals, three draw wins and two ground balls.

“Our division is so competitive that we cannot afford to come out slow or get down by too much,” said Gallihugh. “Colorado State brought their energy, intensity and fire from the first whistle, and our slow start couldn’t keep up with them.”

The Lopes host the University of Arizona at GCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Mar. 29 at 3 pm in their final game before hosting the Western Women’s Lacrosse League Playoffs in mid-April.
