Wins over Denver, Colorado State propel Lopes to No. 13 ranking in first national poll of season

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Women’s Ice Hockey team is ranked in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I Women’s Poll. It’s a historic milestone for the program, since the Lopes enter the poll for the first time ever at No. 13. GCU is one of five teams from the Western Women’s Collegiate Hockey League (WWCHL) represented in the poll (defending WWCHL Champion University of Colorado is 1st, Midland University (NE) is 7th, Arizona State University is 12th, and the University of Denver (CO) rounds out the poll at No. 15).
The Lopes earned the ranking in only their second year of existence after splitting their four games over the weekend at the WWCHL Showcase in Colorado. Three of the four games were against fellow ranked squads: the Lopes lost to top-ranked Colorado to begin the weekend, then split a pair of games against 15th-ranked Denver. The Lopes also split two matchups against No. 12 ASU to begin the season.
The tests will continue for the Lopes in the coming weeks, since they’ll have a pair of road games in early November against No. 7 Midland, and they’ll face the Sun Devils twice more before the semester break in December. The Lopes’ next game happens Sunday, November 4, when they return to the friendly confines of AZ Ice Arcadia (38th Street and Thomas Road (building is behind the Sprint Store) to host Colorado State University. The puck drops at the special starting time of 10:30 am. General admission tickets are $5, are available at the door; and kids, GCU students, and GCU faculty (with ID Card) are FREE at all home games.
