In the first Tuesday night games of the conference season, the two Grand Canyon University Women’s Club Basketball teams split their games in week 6 of the Arizona Women’s Basketball League (AWBL) at the brand-new Canyon Activity Center on the GCU campus. GCU Purple stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 60-51 win over Arizona Christian University, while GCU White dropped their game to the Bears of Bella Vista College Prep, 89-50.

In a battle of two teams meeting for the first time of AWBL play, GCU Purple set the pace early against the Firebirds of ACU, scoring the first basket and ending the first quarter with a 10-point lead. The ACU zone defense slowed down the Lopes’ momentum in the second quarter, but still trailed, 28-19, at the half.
ACU opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game. The Lopes showed they had more fight to give, going on a run of their own to take the lead back and build it to a 50-40 lead after three quarters. The fourth quarter was an intense back-and-forth battle, but the Lopes stayed resilient to secure the 60-51 win over the Firebirds.
“We were disciplined. We just went back to what we do,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Kyle Speed. “I think we let up a little bit. Their zone was able to slow us down, and we had a hard time taking shots, but this is a resilient group and they were able to find ways to get it done.”
GCU freshman Adrienne Graybill led the Lopes with 13 points, with six of those coming in the pivotal third quarter.
“Graybill did a really good job tonight finding open gaps and getting to open spots in the zone to score some big buckets for us,” said Speed.
Junior Jenny Albano, who filled in at starting point guard for the Lopes, also finished with eight points.
Bella Vista College Prep 89, GCU White 50
Bella Vista College Prep kept pace with league-leading GCU Purple with a dominant 89-50 win over GCU White Tuesday night at the CAC. The Lopes, who had just seven players in uniform, never led in the game. The trio of Jaycee Vick, Lauren Delos Santos and Samantha Ibarra led the way in scoring for GCU with 12 points each.
This Saturday, February 16, AWBL play continues as GCU Purple takes on GCU White in the Canyon Activity Center at 10 am. Admission is FREE.
