Despite it being his very first meet, Grand Canyon University Powerlifting Club senior Theodore Kruger tamed the competition Saturday at the United States Powerlifting Association 2021 Unbreakable Gear Classic, capturing a first-place finish.
Competing in the 120kg junior men 20-23-year-old division, Kruger recorded a 375-pound squat, 236-pound bench press and an outstanding 501-pound deadlift. Kruger’s total weight lifted came out to 1,112 pounds, enough for tops in his class.
“I was surprised with how much stronger I became throughout my pre-competition training,” said Kruger. “My 501-pound deadlift was my favorite lift of the day.”
The lack of first-meet jitters impressed Kruger’s coach as well.
“He was phenomenal,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Jimmy Vasquez. “He came in to take care of business and came out with some hardware to show for it.”
The success in this meet was especially important for Kruger, since it could serve as a qualifier for either the USPA Drug Tested National Championship or the USPA Drug Tested North American Championship later this year.
