GCU Men’s and Women’s Bowling had impressive showings this past weekend at the Oak Tree Open & Floria Financial Services Open in Diamond Bar, California.

On Saturday, the GCU Men’s JV & Varsity teams both placed 2nd. On Sunday, Men’s JV placed 2nd and Men’s Varsity placed 1st.

Meanwhile, GCU Women’s Bowling defeated San Jose State University both days.

GCU Men’s & Women’s Bowling Head Coach Ben Canfield discussed how he was proud of his team’s efforts this past weekend.

“It was a super successful weekend, ” said Lopes’ Bowling Head Coach Ben Canfield.  “I am proud of all 17 bowlers that competed.  It was the first time all year the teams traveled together. I am also proud of how hard the team worked and communicated.”

Canfield also discussed the key contributions of assistant head coach Cameron Smith from this past weekend.

“Smith bowled for GCU the past two years and was an All-American last year,” said Canfield. “We were able to use his experience this weekend as he mainly coached the Men’s Varsity team to help them bring home the win on Sunday.”

Individually, Lopes Men’ s Varsity Bowlers Joshua Mabry and Donovan Koff posted back-to-back top 5 individual performances, with Mabry finishing 3rd on Saturday and 4th on Sunday; while Koff finished 5th on Saturday and 1st on Sunday.

For the Men’s JV bowlers, Taylor Palm finished 17th overall on Saturday, and Michael McQuisten finished 16th overall on Sunday.

“After the first day of bowling was complete, we went back into the hotel to get into the right mindset for Sunday,” said Mabry. “It was the team’s second 2nd place finish of the year. It was difficult. We made the right adjustments for the next day and won on Sunday.”

On the women’s side, Emily Ornelas placed 1st on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday; while freshman Kaylee Am-Khong placed 2nd on Saturday and 1st on Sunday.

“It was a great overall learning experience for the team,” said Ornelas. “A couple of bowlers are newcomers. They have not experienced college bowling yet, but getting wins both days helped the team gain confidence.”

The GCU Men’s and Women’s Bowling teams next head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational and the Collegiate Shoot-Out between December 17-20.
