Light week of national action keeps Lopes in same spot
By: Jim Howell/GCU Club Sports Information Director
For the second straight week, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 15th in the D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s the sixth straight week that the Lopes are in the national poll, and they’ve now spent a pair of weeks in each of three ranked places (No. 19 to start, then No. 18 before jumping three spots a week ago). The No. 15 ranking remains the highest spot the Lopes have enjoyed since moving up to D1 over the summer.
The Lopes’ national standing wasn’t harmed by the fact that they were idle this week-mainly because most of the other ranked teams in the country had the week off as well. In fact, 18 of the 20 teams in last week’s poll stayed in their same spot, while No. 19 University of Utah (the team GCU defeated, 48-34, in their last game February 17) and No. 18 UC-Davis switched spots this week.
The game against the 19th-ranked Utes kicked off a three-game road trip which won’t continue until they travel to face the 18th-ranked Cal-Davis Aggies in Davis, California on Wednesday, March 14. The Lopes’ only remaining game on their home schedule happens March 26 when they host Cal Poly at GCU Stadium on the GCU campus.
The entire D1A College Rugby Rankings for this week are listed below:
|1||St. Mary’s (CA)||1|
|12||Notre Dame College (OH)||12|
|13||San Diego State||13|
