Grand Canyon University has announced that the men’s rugby match between GCU and St. Mary’s College of California – scheduled for this afternoon (Saturday) at 1 pm at GCU Stadium – has been officially postponed. The match has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 2 at 1 pm at GCU Stadium.
GCU officials were notified early this morning by Gaels’ coaches that their scheduled flight from northern California to Phoenix had been cancelled, and officials agreed that it would be impossible to reschedule a flight in time to play the match before the end of the day. The cancellation reduces the Lopes’ regular season schedule to eight matches-although officials from the schools are working to reschedule today’s match for a date later in the season. The cancellation won’t affect either team’s overall record.
Therefore, the regular season opener for the 19th-ranked Lopes will now be Friday, February 1 as the Lopes commence a three-game road swing. They’ll face off against California Polytechnic State University at 7 pm that night in San Luis Obispo, California, before finishing the weekend at University of California-Santa Barbara on Sunday, February 3.
The Lopes’ regular season home opener will now happen four weeks from today on Saturday afternoon, February 16, when they’ll host the Broncos of Santa Clara University. The Lopes and Broncos will tangle at 1 pm that Saturday afternoon at the GCU Practice Soccer Field on the west side of the GCU campus.
