Dominant victory over San Diego State Saturday earns Lopes two-spot move in new rankings

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked No. 18 in the latest D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s a rise of two spots from the No. 20 position that GCU has held onto the last two weeks. The Lopes were one of just two teams in the poll (along with No. 2 St. Mary’s College) that actually improved their standing in this week’s ranking. This is the 20th time in the last 21 polls that GCU has been represented.
The Lopes answered the bell after being dominated one week by putting on a dominant performance of their own the next week. The aforementioned 2nd-ranked Gaels of SMC tagged the Lopes with a 73-point loss two weekends ago at the GCU Practice Soccer Field, so the Lopes promptly took out their frustrations on San Diego State University this past Saturday for the same 73-point margin on the same field. The 83-10 drubbing was the Lopes’ most impressive performance to date, and they did it in their final home match of the regular season.
The Lopes’ final regular season road trip of 2019 begins this Saturday, March 16 as the Lopes head to northern California to face the team they’re currently tied with for 2nd place in the California Conference: University of California-Davis. The Lopes and Aggies kick off at 1 pm Saturday in Davis, California.
