Perfect northern California weekend helps Lopes jump two spots in latest rankings

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 12th in the D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s a move up of two spots this week, and it’s the second time in as many weeks that the Lopes have inched upward in the national rankings. This week’s ranking also marks the ninth straight week that the Lopes have earned a spot in the national poll, and it continues to set records for the program as the highest ranking they’ve enjoyed since the move upward to DI this past summer.
The Lopes have been able to accomplish all of this while going nearly a full month without playing a match-something they were finally able to change in a big way this past week. The Lopes got back on the pitch last Wednesday with an impressive 45-14 rout on the road against No. 20 Cal-Davis before winding up a perfect 2-0 sweep of the northern California teams with a dominant 83-13 victory over Santa Clara Saturday. The Lopes are currently in line for a playoff spot, but know they’ll need to extend their current four-match winning streak to stay there. The Lopes will wind up their regular season schedule this coming Monday, March 26, as they host Cal Poly at GCU Stadium on the GCU campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 5PM, and admission is FREE.
