14-point upset of No. 16 Utah gives Lopes highest DI national ranking ever

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 15th in the DIA College Rugby Top 20 Poll. The jump of three spots from the No. 18 ranking they’ve had the past two weeks gives GCU their highest national ranking since moving up to DI over the summer, and it’s the largest jump of any school in this week’s poll. It’s also the fifth straight week the Lopes have spent in the poll.
After a week off last week, the Lopes got back into action impressively, using a 2nd-half comeback to down the University of Utah, 48-34, dropping the Utes from the No. 16 slot to GCU’s previous ranking of 18th. The Lopes have now split their four matches over nationally ranked squads, beating Utah and San Diego State.
The Lopes now will fight the possibility of rust, since their current three-game road trip for the Lopes will take them to Davis, California, but not until March 14th. That’s when they’ll face another nationally ranked squad, the 19th-ranked Aggies of UC-Davis, in a 6PM kickoff. The Lopes only have one more match on their home schedule: Monday, March 26th, when they host Cal Poly at GCU Stadium on the GCU campus.
