Lopes’ rainout Saturday results in drop of one spot in latest rankings

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 20th in the latest D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s a drop of one spot from last week’s No. 19 national ranking, but it’s the fifth time this season that the Lopes have clung to the final spot in the poll. It’s also the 18th time in the last 19 polls that GCU has been represented.
The Lopes’ slide in the polls wasn’t due to anything they did on the pitch, since Mother Nature denied them that chance this past weekend. The two non-stop days of rain in the Phoenix area last week made conditions unplayable for the Lopes’ scheduled match Saturday at Arizona State University, and the match was called off. The inactivity also cost them a tie for first place in the California League standings – although they remain undefeated in league play and just ½ game out of the top spot.
That sets up a showdown this Saturday, March 2, with the owners of that top spot in the league, No. 3 St. Mary’s College of California, to kick off the Lopes’ final regular season homestand of the season. The match will be held at the GCU Practice Soccer Field on the GCU campus, kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm, and admission is FREE.
