The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 19th in the latest D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. After being knocked out of the poll last week for the first time since January of last year, the Lopes are back in the rankings at No. 19. It’s the third time in the last five polls that the Lopes have enjoyed that ranking, and have only been ranked higher than that once this year (their first-ever preseason national ranking of No. 12).
The Lopes made a powerful statement this past Saturday as to why they shouldn’t have had their streak of being in 16 consecutive polls snapped, when they scored the final 59 points of the match against Santa Clara University to post a dominant 76-3 win. The win not only upped the Lopes’ record overall to 3-1, but kept them undefeated in three California League matches. The Lopes also remained tied at the top of the league standings with No. 3 St. Mary’s College of California.
Those 3rd-ranked Gaels lay in wait for the Lopes after they head across town this Saturday, February 23 to battle in-state rival Arizona State University in a 1 pm tilt in Tempe. The Lopes then come home to begin their final regular season homestand of the season as they host SMC Saturday afternoon, March 2 at GCU Stadium on the GCU campus. Kickoff for the match (which was rescheduled from January 19) is 1 pm, and admission is FREE.
