For the second straight week, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 20th in the latest D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. In only their second year of Division I existence, the Lopes have now been a part of not only all four polls this season (beginning the year with their first-ever preseason national ranking of No. 12), but the last 16 consecutive D1A Rugby polls dating back to late January of last year.
The Lopes held on to their national ranking courtesy of a strong start to the regular season this past weekend. The Lopes fought through inclement weather all weekend in California to knock off both a team that was ranked much of last year, California Polytechnic State University, 32-21, last Friday; as well as UC-Santa Barbara, 62-5, Sunday afternoon.
The Lopes will shoot for a perfect road trip when they conclude their season-opening road swing in Tucson this Saturday as they battle No. 9 University of Arizona at 3 pm. The Lopes – whose original home opener was postponed due to flight delays in January – will finally break the seal on their home schedule on Saturday, February 16, when they host Santa Clara University at 1 pm at GCU Stadium on the GCU campus.
