The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked No. 15 in the final D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll of the 2018-19 season. While it’s a drop of one spot from their No. 14 position in the final regular season poll a month ago, it’s still the 23rd time in the last 24 polls that GCU has been represented in the poll. It’s also the second time in the Lopes’ 2 years on the Division I level that they’ve landed among the D1A Rugby Top 15 to end the season, finishing in the No. 11 spot a year ago.
The Lopes’ 6-4 season in 2018-19 was highlighted by the fact that in four of their six wins, the Lopes’ defense allowed their opponents 10 points or less, while the offense posted 60 points or better four times. Meanwhile, all of their losses came against teams ranked 11th or higher. The highlight of the season came in GCU’s regular season finale March 9, when they drubbed San Diego State University, 83-10, at the GCU Practice Soccer Field. For the second year in a row, the Lopes qualified for the Nationals Round of 16.
Now that the 15s season is put to bed, the Lopes shift their focus to the D1A Rugby National 7s Tournament, which will start next Friday, May 24, in Tucson. The Lopes already know that they are one of the 16 teams to be invited to the tournament, and are awaiting the announcement of their pool, first opponent, and game time of the first match. The Lopes finished 4th – their highest finish ever in the tournament – a year ago.
