The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 11th in the final D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll of the 2017-18 season. In the 12 straight weeks that the team has been nationally ranked this season, the Lopes finished with their highest national ranking ever, besting the No. 12 ranking that they held in the final regular season poll at the beginning of April. It’s also the 7th straight time that the Lopes have been a part of the D1A Top 15.
The pollsters were apparently pleased by what the Lopes did in their inaugural season at the D1 level. The Lopes went 3-3 against teams that finished ranked in the final poll, with wins over No. 15 California Polytechnic State University, No. 16 San Diego State University and No. 20 University of California-Davis, while dropping matches to No. 9 University of Arizona and No. 6 Brigham Young University in the regular season. Their 3rd loss over a nationally ranked opponent came in the postseason at the D1A College Rugby Round of 16, but the team that beat them, University of California-Berkeley, wound up in the national championship match against eventual champion Life University, which certainly improved GCU’s standing.
GCU finished the 2017-18 season with an overall record of 7-3.
