Lopes’ upset of San Diego State propels them into latest D1A Rugby Poll for 1st time as College 15s

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 19th in the D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s the first time since the Lopes moved up from College 7’s to College 15’s that they have enjoyed a national ranking in men’s rugby.
After a very successful 8-3-1 season in 2016-17, the Lopes became one of just two teams at the time (the other being Brigham Young University) to compete in D1A as a non-conference independent in 2017-18 when they joined last July (since then, Central Washington, Navy and Utah Valley University have followed suit as independents). The Lopes are the only new team in this week’s poll-having jumped past No. 20 Wisconsin, and knocking previously ranked Iona University out of this week’s rankings. The Lopes earned the national respect with a huge, come-from-behind 22-18 win on the road Saturday afternoon against then-10th-ranked San Diego State University.
Speaking of BYU, the string of games against nationally ranked opponents continues this weekend for the Lopes as they head to Utah to face the 3rd-ranked Cougars in Provo Saturday afternoon at 1PM Arizona time. Their next home matchup happens Friday, February 2nd, when they return to GCU Stadium to face unranked Arizona State University in a 7PM clash. Admission is FREE.
The entire D1A College Rugby Rankings are listed below:
|1||St. Mary’s (CA)||1|
|13||Notre Dame College (OH)||14|
|14||San Diego State||10|
