Lopes fall in national rankings for first time this season

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 13th in the DIA College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s the first time in the 10 straight weeks that the Lopes have been in the poll that they’ve actually fallen – even if it’s just a single notch from the No. 12 ranking they owned a week ago. That No. 12 national ranking was the highest ranking they’ve enjoyed since the move upward to DI last summer. The minor drop comes at a bad time, since the Lopes’ national ranking has a direct bearing on whether or not they will reach the DIA Playoffs, and who they would have to face in the first round of the postseason if they qualify. As the 12th-ranked team last week, the Lopes were slotted for the No. 14 seed in the 16-team playoff.
While on the surface, the rankings slide seems a bit of a ‘head-scratcher’, since GCU gutted out a 31-26 win in their only match of the week at GCU Stadium Monday night. They also did it against a team – California Polytechnic State University – that moved back into the DIA Rugby Poll despite losing to GCU and to No. 9 Arizona in the span of two days this past weekend. However, this week’s rankings were determined before last night’s match (even if the poll came out today), so last night’s match won’t take full effect on the rankings until next week. That win last night also closed out the regular season schedule for the Lopes, so they now play the waiting game to find out if their bid for the postseason in their first year at this level becomes reality in a week or two.
