After a tough loss to the University of Arizona ten days ago, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team proved their fortitude and resilience, bouncing back with a dominant 76-3 win over the Broncos from Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon at GCU Stadium on the GCU campus.
According to Lopes Head Coach Cam Wyper, one of the main catalysts for his team’s weekend success came from their ability to work in unison.
“Our forwards played really well, and did a nice job of setting up our backs in scoring situations,” explained Wyper. “The whole match was a really good mix of our guys working together like that, and putting each other in positions to succeed.”
The Lopes never trailed, scoring the first 17 points of the match. GCU’s Ronnie Sallee and Hayden Hill led the onslaught with 3 tries each.
While the Lopes’ teamwork clearly paid off on the scoreboard, Wyper was excited to see his athletes all buy in to the pre-set game plan.
“We were able to finally put everything together in terms of execution – at least more so than we had been doing in the past,” explained Wyper. “A win like this gives the guys a lot of confidence, especially when they can put up numbers like that against quality competition.”
The Lopes now sit with a 3-1 overall record, but are undefeated in 3 matches in California League play and tied for first place. The Lopes have 6 matches left in the season-beginning with a non-conference tilt this Saturday on the road against in-town rival Arizona State University.
“We expect them to be pretty tough – especially since the match will be a sort of cross town rivalry,” said Wyper. “Our focus will just be continuing to execute our plan, and hopefully we will be able to build even more momentum into the back half of the season.”
The Lopes will face off against the Sun Devils at 1 pm this Saturday Feb. 23, at ASU in Tempe. Their next home matchup happens at GCU Stadium on Saturday, March 2 against the team they’re tied atop the division with: 3rd-ranked St. Mary’s College from California. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm that day, and admission is FREE.
