Lopes’ Saturday loss doesn’t hurt them in rankings

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is again ranked 20th in the latest D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll. It’s the second consecutive week that the Lopes own the final spot in the rankings, and it’s the sixth time this season they’ve found themselves at No. 20. It’s also the 19th time in the last 20 polls that GCU has been represented.
This is one week that the Lopes won’t argue one bit about staying put in the rankings, since most surmised that their lopsided loss to No. 3 St. Mary’s College of California at home Saturday afternoon would eliminate GCU from national attention for at least a week. The evident respect that the 3rd-ranked Gaels – who won the national championship two years ago – tend to earn on a national scale, coupled with the growing respect that the Lopes have earned over the past two seasons, likely contributed to the national pollsters giving GCU the benefit of the doubt.
The Lopes know they’ll need an impressive showing this weekend in their 2019 home finale if they want to keep the national respect flowing. They’ll host unranked San Diego State University this Saturday, March 9, at the GCU Practice Soccer Field on the GCU campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm, and admission is FREE.
