The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team is ranked 19th in the first D1A College Rugby Top 20 Poll of the regular season. After enjoying their first preseason national ranking this past fall, the Lopes will actually begin their regular season down seven notches from the No. 12 spot they held in that September poll. It’s now the 14th straight poll that the Lopes have been represented in since moving up to D1A Rugby a year ago.
The Lopes will start their season this weekend in the same spot that they first entered the poll after their 2018 regular season opener. They knocked off then-10th-ranked San Diego State University on the road to gain their first national D1 attention last January. This year, the regular season opener is a much tougher challenge, but the Lopes will be home for it.
The Lopes –who finished 2017-18 with a 7-3 mark and their first-ever D1A College Rugby playoff berth – will kick off 2018-19 this Saturday afternoon, January 19th by hosting the team that spent most of last year as the top-ranked team in the nation until they were upset in the D1A College Rugby National Semifinals: No. 4 St. Mary’s College from California. The Lopes and Gaels will tangle at GCU Stadium starting at 1 pm this Saturday.
