Coming off an impressive overtime victory last week, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team could not continue their success Saturday on Prescott Field against the University of Arizona – thanks to a game-winning UofA goal with half a minute left. The 10-9 loss drops the Lopes’ record to 1-2 on the season.
“We simply did not play well,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Jeff Guy. “We did not stick to our game plan and we did not execute when needed.”
UofA opened with a solid strike for the first goal of the match, but Lopes’ attacker Nick Whittall then scored twice in a 40-second span to give GCU a 2-1 edge after the first quarter. The Lopes extended their lead to 4-1 early in the second quarter before the Wildcats answered with back-to-back scores of their own. GCU’s Cameron Gilmore and Grayson Goodyear responded with another two goals in rapid succession before the Wildcats’ Mason DePaola notched the last goal of the quarter to cut the Lopes’ lead to 6-4 at the half.
It was in the third quarter when UofA did most of their damage, scoring four straight goals to take an 8-7 lead after three. Gilmore then took matters into his own hands, tying the score at 8-8 less than a minute into the fourth quarter, then putting the Lopes ahead six minutes later. That’s where the Lopes’ offense stopped as UofA’s Peyton Boyd scored his third goal of the day with just over 5 minutes left, setting the stage for Luke Liljenstople’s game-winner with 34 seconds left in regulation.
“Kudos to UofA for playing hard until the final whistle,” said Lopes’ senior defenseman D.J. Hazell. “We have some gaps to fill and improvements to be made as a team going forward.”
Gilmore led the way for the Lopes with 4 goals overall, while Whittall scored twice himself.
The Lopes will be back at Prescott Field on Mar. 20 at 1 pm to face off against Concordia University Irvine.
