For the second straight time, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team is ranked No. 21 in the latest 2020 New Balance Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I Coaches Poll released today. It’s the 83rd consecutive time (dating back to Week 7 of the 2013 season) that GCU has earned a spot in the poll. The Lopes are now one of a whopping six Southwestern Lacrosse Conference teams ranked in the MCLA Top 20 (Chapman University remains third, Concordia University Irvine stays 11th, University of Southern California skyrockets from out of the poll to No. 13, and Arizona State University and University of Arizona drop to No. 24 and No. 25, respectively).
The anticipation of the start of Jeff Guy’s second tour of duty as the Lopes’ Head Coach is palpable as GCU tries to use another tough schedule to move their way back into the MCLA Top 10. Eight of the 12 opponents on GCU’s 2020 regular season schedule are currently ranked. The Lopes – who have netted a pair of national titles in the last five years – commence their 2020 campaign with a two-game, non-conference road trip to San Luis Obispo, California this weekend. They’ll face No. 18 Santa Clara University Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:45 pm, then battle host No. 5 California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo Sunday at 3:15 pm (times listed are Arizona time).
The Lopes open up their home schedule next Saturday, Feb. 29 as they host Texas A&M University (who would be ranked No. 26 this week if the poll stretched that far) at GCU’s Prescott Field. Game time is 1 pm that day, and admission is FREE. The entire New Balance MCLA Preseason Coaches’ Poll is listed below:
