Lopes’ 2nd straight weekend split drops them two spots in new MCLA DI Coaches’ Poll

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team is ranked No. 15 in the latest Under Armour Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I Coaches’ Poll. It’s the second straight week that the Lopes have slid two spots in the poll, but it’s the 74th consecutive time (dating back to Week 7 of the 2013 season) that the Lopes have enjoyed a spot in the poll. The Lopes remain one of four SLC teams ranked in the MCLA Top 20 (although while Chapman (T-6th) and Concordia-Irvine (T-6th) remain entrenched in the poll, UC-Santa Barbara has dropped out, and Southern California is new this week at No. 24).
The slide of two spots for the second straight week coincides with the fact that the Lopes just finished their second straight weekend of splitting against two nationally ranked foes. The Lopes followed a disappointing loss to No. 9 Colorado Thursday night at GCU Stadium with a resounding 18-9 victory over No. 20 Colorado State Saturday at Prescott Field. That means the Lopes’ season-opening six-game homestand is down to one game, and yet again, it involves a clash against another nationally ranked squad. Prescott Field is the site for the Lopes hosting No. 13 Brigham Young University, and is a rematch of last year’s opening-round game at the MCLA National Championships. Opening face-off between the Lopes and Cougars is scheduled for 1PM this Saturday, March 9 at Prescott Field. Admission is FREE.
