In its quest to be No. 1 at the end of the season, GCU men’s lacrosse took a step closer to that status Wednesday by rising to a No. 2 national ranking in this week’s Under Armour Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division I Coaches Poll.
The Lopes (8-1) jumped a spot after beating Arizona State, 9-7, in front of 3,840 fans at GCU Stadium on Friday.
GCU has remained in the weekly poll’s top five throughout the season. This week, the men’s lacrosse team received two of the 23 first-place votes as well, trailing only undefeated California in the poll. The Lopes’ only loss this season came to No. 5 Brigham Young but coach Manny Rapkin’s team has recorded wins against four other teams ranked in this week’s top 12 — No. 3 Colorado, No. 7 ASU, No. 10 Colorado State and No. 12 Virginia Tech.
The Lopes return to GCU Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday for another in-state rivalry game with No. 23 Arizona.
