After a heartbreaking loss last week to University of Arizona that went down to the wire, The Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team bounced back with an offensive clinic at GCU’s Prescott Field, outlasting Concordia University Irvine, 18-15. The 18-goal showing is the most goals scored in one game by the Lopes this season, and evens their overall mark at 2-2.

“We shared the ball much better today,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Jeff Guy. “We stepped up and hit our shots because the ball was moving so well for us.”

Trailing 4-3 after the first quarter, the Lopes dominated CUI the rest of the first half. GCU sophomore attackman Grayson Goodyear gashed the Concordia defense early in the second quarter with back-to-back goals in a 25-second span, and racking up four of the six Lopes’ goals in the quarter. Meanwhile, Lopes’ goalkeeper John Tibbetts made save after save, holding Concordia to three goals in the period, and sending GCU to halftime with a 9-7 lead.

GCU didn’t let up in the third quarter, scoring five goals to take a 14-11 lead heading to the 4th quarter. The Lopes then let their guard down a bit down the stretch, twice allowing back-to-back Concordia scores in the fourth quarter that evened up the score at 15 with just over eight minutes to play.

The Lopes’ offense responded again, with none other than Goodyear notching the Lopes’ go-ahead goal, and teammate Nick Whittall sealing the victory with his fifth and sixth scores of the day down the stretch.

“I found a soft spot in the defense where they were relaxing too much, and I just attacked,” said Goodyear, who finished the afternoon with a whopping eight goals. “We also had number 1 (Whittall) making great plays as well. I’m glad we could get the win out of it.”

The Lopes finish off the 2021 campaign at Prescott Field this Saturday, Mar. 27 at 3 pm against Chapman University.
