The Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team has been ranked No. 10 in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Rankings of Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I for the 2019 season. The announcement was part of IL’s annual 2019 Face-Off Yearbook. The media entity – which is also an affiliate of ESPN – also named GCU senior attacker Cam Wengreniuk (wen-GREN-nee-yuk) as one of their five candidates for Inside Lacrosse Preseason Player of the Year. The announcements come almost exactly one month before the Lopes break the seal on their 2019 regular season at home against Santa Clara University. The Lopes are one of just three teams from the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference to be ranked in the poll (2018 national championship runnerup Chapman is ranked 1st, and Arizona State is 12th).
The Lopes will enter the season seeking their fifth straight berth in the MCLA National Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah in early May. The Lopes will also hope that playing in an odd-numbered year will continue to be magical for them, since they won the national title in both 2015 and 2017. Meanwhile, Wengreniuk will look to build off the momentum he ended the 2018 season with. The native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada finished a 32-goal, 11-assist junior season by scoring five goals in the Lopes’ opening-round game of the national tournament last May.
The Lopes’ quest for their third national title in five years will commence on Sunday, February 3. The Lopes will kick off a season-opening six-game homestand that afternoon as they host the Broncos of Santa Clara University, who finished 2nd in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League a year ago. The game will kick off at noon at Prescott Field on the GCU campus.
