Season-opening wins over pair of ranked teams keeps Lopes on top of poll

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Under Armour Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I Coaches’ Poll released earlier today. The Lopes have owned the top spot for all three polls this year, and have now been No. 1 in the poll dating back to Week 9 of the 2017 season-a string of six consecutive polls. The Lopes not only remained the highest-ranked of five Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) teams ranked in the MCLA Top 25, but were also the only one of the five to remain in their same spot from a week ago (Chapman dropped to 3rd, Arizona State is down to 6th, UC-Santa Barbara moves up to 14th, and Concordia-Irvine moves up to 16th).
The Lopes stayed atop the poll thanks to a pair of season-opening wins on the road this past weekend. Both victories came against nationally ranked squads as they went to overtime to knock off No. 13 Cal Poly, 8-7, Friday, before stifling the offense of No. 14 UCSB for a 9-3 victory Sunday afternoon. The Lopes have yet another top 15 power to deal with in their upcoming two-game homestand, which commences March 2. That’s when GCU will battle unranked University of Georgia at 7 pm before preparing for 15th-ranked Boston College on Monday night at 6:30 pm. Both games will be played at GCU Stadium and admission is FREE.
