In the final game of the season, coming off their impressive win over Concordia University Irvine, the Grand Canyon University Lacrosse team suffered a 16-9 defeat to Chapman University Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field on the GCU campus. The loss dropped the Lopes under the .500 mark to end the season with a 2-3 record.
With help from a hat trick performance by Nick Whittall – who scored nine goals in the Lopes’ final two games – GCU stuck with the Panthers through the first 2 1/2 quarters. The Lopes even took an 8-7 lead early in the third after a solid upper corner strike from Lopes’ attacker Grayson Goodyear.
After that, Chapman turned multiple Lopes’ turnovers into a 5-0 Panthers’ run over the final ten minutes of the 3rd quarter. George McGuirk’s three goals in the quarter helped give the Panthers the lead for good.
“When you’re playing a team of that caliber, you cannot afford to make mistakes,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Jeff Guy. “Our own mistakes caught up to us at the end of the third quarter.”
The Lopes’ offense never got on track in the 4th quarter, held scoreless until they notched the final goal of the contest with almost four minutes left in regulation.
“These three men have grown so much through this program.” said Guy. “They showed great work ethic and dedication to the team, and that is reflected in who they are today.”
The seniors appreciated their time with the program, dedicating their development to the excellent mentorship from their coach.
“Coach Guy pushes us to be great every day,” said Hazell. “He’s done his part to make me a better person both on and off the field.
