Back-to-back losses in weekend in Colorado send Lopes out of MCLA Top 5 for first time in 2 years

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team is ranked No. 6 in the latest Under Armour Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I Coaches’ Poll released earlier today. It’s a drop of three spots from last week’s No. 3 ranking, and it’s the first time since exactly this same week two years ago (Week 6 of the 2016 season) that the Lopes have dropped out of the MCLA Top 5. Nevertheless, it’s the 24th straight poll that GCU has been ranked 6th or higher in the poll, and it’s the 43rd straight poll (since the 2015 season’s preseason poll) that they’ve been in the MCLA Top 10. The Lopes stay one of five Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) teams ranked in the MCLA Top 25 (Chapman is 1st, Concordia-Irvine is 8th, Arizona State is 16th, and UC-Santa Barbara is 18th).
The Lopes had been given little respect over the past month, since they’d been dropped from the top spot to 3rd in recent weeks despite staying unbeaten. This week, however, since despite dropping out of the ranks of the unbeaten with back-to-back losses Thursday and Saturday, the pollsters may have given the Lopes a little credit for being in command until late in the game of both of those road matchups at No. 22 Colorado State and No. 3 Colorado. The Lopes (6-2) now focus on salvaging a split of this four-game road trip as they head to the ASU West Campus (4701 West Thunderbird Road in Glendale) for a noon clash this Saturday with No. 16 Arizona State University (the trip ends April 7th at University of Arizona in Tucson). The Lopes’ next home matchup is their regular season finale on Saturday, April 14th against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas at Prescott Field on the GCU campus at 1PM, and admission is FREE.
