Undefeated Lopes drop out of top spot despite impressive win over No. 9 Boston College

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse team has been ranked No. 2 in the latest Under Armour Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I Coaches’ Poll released earlier today. The Lopes were knocked out of the top spot by a single point by surging Utah, even though both teams received 12 first-place votes each. It’s the first time since last April 2017 that the Lopes haven’t been the frontrunners of the national poll, and it snaps a string of six consecutive polls that the Lopes were ranked 1st (back to Week 9 of last year). Despite the slide, the Lopes remained the highest-ranked of five Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) teams ranked in the MCLA Top 25 (Chapman in 3rd, Arizona State is 10th, Concordia-Irvine is 12th, and UC-Santa Barbara is 17th).
The Lopes fell out of the top spot of the poll despite remaining one of nine undefeated teams in the rankings. The Lopes stayed without a loss thanks to a pair of victories at home this past week, including a dominating 10-1 rout of No. 9 Boston College Monday. The Lopes also downed unranked Georgia, 13-6, Friday night at GCU Stadium. GCU has now claimed three nationally ranked victims in their four wins. The Lopes now head back out the road to southern California where they will face San Diego State University this Saturday afternoon, March 10. The Lopes’ next home matchup happens Saturday, March 17, when they host Sonoma State University at Prescott Field on the GCU campus, and admission is FREE. Both Saturday faceoffs are scheduled for 2 pm Arizona time.
