Lopes’ first-ever win over Arizona keeps top 10 status intact in latest ACHA D2 West Poll
By: Jim Howell/GCU Club Sports Information Director
GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that for the third straight week, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey Division II team is ranked 9th in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II West Poll. It’s also the 6th consecutive week that the Lopes are in the ACHA top 10 (including their highest-ever ranking of No. 8 two weeks ago). The Lopes continued to show why they’ve spent nearly two months in the top 10 this past weekend as they upset the 13th-ranked team in ACHA Division I hockey, the University of Arizona, in GCU’s first game back after the holiday break.
The Lopes’ ranking will get its most severe test of the season this weekend, since they will head to Colorado to face four ranked teams in the span of just four days. The Lopes will clash with No. 14 Colorado State Friday night, 19th-ranked Dakota College Bottineau Saturday, top-5 power Boise State Sunday afternoon, and finish in Boulder Monday with a matchup against the 12th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes. The Lopes’ first home game of 2018 happens Saturday night, January 20, against 10th-ranked Arizona State at 6:30 pm at GCU’s home ice, AZ Ice Peoria. Admission is FREE.
