Unlike the ice, the competition was hot.
Friday night saw an intense and fiery hockey match at AZ Ice Arcadia in Phoenix as Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey broke its entire roster into two teams (GCU Black and GCU White) and battled it out, with GCU Black coming away with a 6-4 victory.
Even Lopes’ Head Coach Danny Roy, who has led the program for six seasons, was surprised at the high level of competition within his squad.
“The intensity and passion picked up more than I thought it would as the game went on,” said Roy. “It goes to show that these guys are more than excited to be back out on the ice competing.”
GCU Black dominated early, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after the first period. GCU White climbed their way back into it in the second, led by Lopes’ senior center and captain Matt Mezik, who notched two goals in the period. Despite that, GCU Black refused to be caught, taking a 5-4 lead into the third and never relinquishing it. Lopes’ sophomore forward and captain Kory Potash sealed the win with the last goal of the contest midway through the 3rd period.
Friday’s scrimmage comes after two full weeks of on-ice practice, which allowed the team get back into form and put on a show for the crowd.
“Especially considering how limited we were during the summer, and then the fall semester, it’s great to have these practices to help get our conditioning and play up to speed,” said Mezik. “The most important thing is to continue to get this work in on the ice.”
The Lopes will continue the series of intrasquad scrimmages on Friday, February 19th at AZ Ice Arcadia at 6:30 pm.
