The Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey Division II team is officially ranked No. 7 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) West Poll. It’s a move up of one spot from last week’s No. 8 ranking, and it’s a rise of six spots within the last two weeks for the Lopes. More importantly, it’s the highest ranking ever for the program, besting the No. 8 ranking that they held not only last week, but for one week last December). It’s also the 15th consecutive poll that the Lopes have enjoyed a ranking-14 of those in the ACHA Top 10. The Lopes’ move up was aided by their 10-3 win and 4-4 overtime tie in their two-game series with No. 17 Weber State University this past weekend.
The games against WSU were the Lopes’ final ACHA matchups for the rest of the calendar year. However, the Lopes will join the GCU Women’s Hockey team this Sunday, December 9, for an exhibition tripleheader. The teams will compete in the Arizona High School Hockey Association (AHSHA) Premier Exhibition against some of the state’s top high school hockey players. The first of the three games commences at 1:30 pm Sunday at AZ Ice Arcadia (38th Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix (arena is right behind the Sprint Store)). Admission to the games is FREE. The Lopes return to ACHA action with a two-game weekend series in Tucson against the University of Arizona January 4 and 5.
