2-1 equals 3-0.

In the program’s final intrasquad scrimmage of the season, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey Division I squad defeated their Division 2 counterparts, 3-0, despite excellent D2 defense.

“The goalie play was key for both teams in this game,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Danny Roy. “But D1’s ability to hold D2 to a 2-1 shot margin is the biggest reason why they won.”

The D1 team struck first right out of the gate as Griffin Duininck and Kory Potach both scored goals in the opening eight minutes of the match. D2 Goalkeeper Matt Diamond muffled the D1 offense the rest of the half, collecting 29 of D2’s 41 total saves. Meanwhile, the D1 defense held D2 scoreless on 27 shots. In the second half, Lopes’ D1 forward Ryan Nolan snuck the puck into the net off a deflection with 17 minutes left in the game to seal the win.

“Overall, I was happy with how both teams played and competed,” said Roy. “That being said, we do have some areas to cover in these next few practices before facing opponents coming up – especially on offense and developing stronger power plays.”

GCU will face outside competition for the first time in over a year when the Lopes’ D2 squad faces off against the College Hockey Elite League (CHEL) D2 team on Mar. 19 at 7:45 pm at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe. The two teams will then finish off the home-and-home series at the Lopes’ home ice of AZ Ice Arcadia on Saturday, Mar. 20 at 1 pm.
