Sweep of Arizona State moves Lopes up to No. 6 in poll

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey Division II team is officially ranked No. 6 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) West Poll. The rise of two spots officially puts the Lopes in their highest position ever in the poll. It’s the 5th straight poll (and the 17th time in the last 18 polls) that the Lopes are ranked in the ACHA Top 10. The Lopes have now been in every ACHA West D2 Poll dating back to the first poll of the 2017-18 season last November.
Since returning from the semester break, the Lopes have come out of the gates quickly. After splitting their first weekend series of 2019 against Division I University of Arizona two weeks ago, the Lopes returned home to AZ Ice Arcadia last weekend and racked up a pair of wins over Arizona State DII team to complete the season sweep of the Sun Devils. The Lopes’ 12-10-4-1 overall record will get severely tested this weekend as they’ll play four games in four days at the Big Mountain Classic in Colorado. Like the Lopes, all four opponents this weekend are ranked in the new poll. The Lopes begin play tonight at 9:15PM (Arizona time) against No. 14 University of Denver, then will face No. 2 Northern Colorado tomorrow, No. 18 Utah State Saturday, and wind up the trip Sunday against No. 4 Boise State. Their final home game of the season is Saturday night, January 26, when they host Northern Arizona University at AZ Ice Arcadia (38th Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix) at 6:30 pm.
