They can now utter the magic words again: on ice.
After several months of not being able to be out on the ice due to the COVID-19 suspensions and protocols, the Grand Canyon University Ice Hockey team is back in business, carving up the rink at AZ Ice Arcadia. The D1 and D2 squads are sharpening their skills in anticipation of upcoming intrasquad scrimmages.
“It is nice to get back into the swing of things and have a consistent practice and scrimmage schedule,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Danny Roy. “Being out on that ice gives us a chance to implement some of our plays and schemes into a game-like environment.”
Although this year’s Lopes are full of young players and new faces, many of the athletes have stepped up in these early practices.
“We have a very young team this year,” said Lopes’ sophomore captain Kory Potach.“That being said, a lot of these younger guys are stepping up as leaders, and it has shown both on the ice and in the locker room.”
Roy and the Lopes hit the ice again in an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday at 6:30 pm at AZ Ice Arcadia.
