For the third straight week, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey Division II team is ranked No. 7 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) West Poll. That puts the Lopes in the ACHA Top 10 for the 8th consecutive time, gives them a ranking in 20 of the last 21 ACHA polls.
The Lopes had no control over maintaining their standing in the rankings, since their regular season ended nearly two weeks ago in a weekend sweep at the hands of now-No. 2 Northern Arizona. However, nearly all of the ACHA West Top 10 had the same idle status as the Lopes did this past week. The sweep put the Lopes’ final regular season mark at 14-14-3.
With the ACHA West Regional Tournament set for the weekend of February 28 at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe, the Lopes’ last way to improve their standings in the polls begins tonight in Utah. The Lopes enter the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League (MWCHL) Playoffs as the top seed of the seven-team tournament, which means they can sit back and watch today’s first day of action with a first-round bye. Their semifinal matchup will happen tomorrow (Friday, February 8) against the lowest remaining seed in Logan, Utah. A win tomorrow puts the Lopes in Saturday’s championship game.
