Lopes stunned in Oregon’s come-from-behind win

“We need our team to buy in and show effort,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Danny Roy. “We need to go out and play better hockey. It’s as simple as that.”

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey team nearly broke out of a four-game losing slump Thursday night at AZ Ice Arcadia against the University of Oregon. Unfortunately, the game took a turn for the worst in the final period, and UO escaped with a narrow 5-4 victory.

After suffering back-to-back, penalty-filled losses in Tempe to Arizona State University last weekend, GCU returned home to turn things around on Thursday. For the first two-thirds of the match, the Lopes were doing just that. Tied, 1-1, after the first period, the Lopes went on a tear in the second, rattling off three goals – including a highlight play from Dylan Dent who slapped a pass from Nate Mohr while the puck was in mid-air into the net, and sending the Lopes into the third period with the 4-1 advantage.

From there, the Lopes seemingly unraveled. Three minutes into the last period, UO scored their second goal of the game. Six minutes after that, the Ducks scored their fifth. While the Lopes created multiple opportunities to tie the game up, they couldn’t cash in on any chances before the final buzzer sounded.

“We had undisciplined mistakes throughout our system in the third,” said Roy. “We were mismanaging plays and doing things halfway.”

The Lopes have an opportunity to turn things around as they finish their homestand against University of Utah tonight (Friday) at 5:30 pm, and against Oregon again tomorrow (Saturday) at 3:30 pm.
