GCU Purple 1, GCU White 0
Grand Canyon University’s Men’s Club Soccer purple team gained another three points in the Southwest Soccer Conference standings with their 1-0 win over GCU White Friday night at GCU’s Prescott Field. The Lopes found the back of the net off of a corner kick in the first half to give GCU Purple the only goal of the night.
“That goal was good on one side of the ball, and totally preventable on the other side,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Lance Thompson. “White had a lot of energy, and Purple missed some doorstep opportunities, so there is a lot for us to evaluate on both sides. It’s a good three points for the purple team getting closer to playoffs.”
The win improves GCU Purple’s record in league play to 7-0-1, putting them one game ahead of Arizona State University, and in first place with two more league matches to go. GCU Purple plays ASU in Tempe on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 pm and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on Saturday, Oct. 12 at noon.
Northern Arizona University 5, GCU White 1
Following the defeat Friday, Sunday’s 5-1 loss to Northern Arizona University dropped GCU White to fourth place in the league.
The match was scoreless until the Lumberjacks scored in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 1-0 advantage at halftime. NAU scored two quick goals in the 50th and 52nd minutes to take a commanding 3-0 edge before GCU converted a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper to narrow NAU’s lead to 3-1. GCU struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities the rest of the half, allowing NAU to put the match away.
Moving into the seventh and final week of the regular season, GCU White is tied with Arizona Christian University for fourth place, with NAU just one loss behind the two teams. The University of Texas at El Paso, who was predicted to contend for a high playoff position, has been removed from the league, which opens an additional playoff position, but that will only be enough if GCU White can finish their season with a few wins.
“This loss really hurt us,” said Thompson. “It could have been a great opportunity to create more ground between us and NAU, but we didn’t take advantage of that. NAU, GCU White and ACU are lumped in at the three, four and five spots, and we certainly don’t want to end up sixth and miss an opportunity at playoffs.”
GCU White hosts Arizona Christian Tuesday at Prescott Field on Tuesday Oct. 8, at 7 pm, and will travel to Tucson to play University of Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 4 pm.
