Since the first game of the season, the Grand Canyon University men’s club soccer team has been nothing short of phenomenal. After accruing a record of two wins, one tie and zero losses, the Lopes entered the 12th Annual Aztec Cup this past weekend expecting to continue their assertion of dominance on the field.
In similar fashion to their regular season, the Lopes coasted through pool play in San Diego, shutting out the hosting San Diego State University Aztecs, 2-0, in game one, then rolling past Point Loma Nazarene University, 3-1, in game two.
Those wins earned the Lopes a spot in the semifinals, where they faced off against Sonoma State University. Riding their momentum from the day before, the Lopes rolled through the match, defeating Sonoma State, 3-1, guaranteeing them a spot in the championship game later that same day.
Although the Lopes had faced little to no resistance in the first three games of the tournament, an offensive juggernaut awaited them in the championship bout. In the first three games of the tournament, California Polytechnic State University managed to hold all three of their opponents to only three goals combined, while scoring a whopping 15 goals of their own.
Although they fought valiantly, the Lopes couldn’t muster enough of a resistance to the suffocating offense of Cal Poly, falling, 6-0, in the championship match.
The Lopes now have nearly a full week to prepare for their next match, which will be held at Prescott Field on the GCU campus against Northern Arizona University on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 pm.
