GCU White loses focus down the stretch

Close games have been a staple of the season for the Grand Canyon University Club Men’s Basketball program. Unfortunately, on Tuesday night at the Canyon Activity Center, GCU White was on the wrong side of that trend, losing, 65-60, to Hillcrest College – who the Lopes beat handily in the first game of the season. GCU Purple also suffered a hard-fought 85-73 loss to Ottawa University, which evened Purple’s record at 2-2.

“We were playing a high-quality brand of basketball to start the season, but recently, we haven’t been playing as a team,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Lamont Lane. “We have to find ways to be better.”

Tuesday: Hillcrest 65, GCU White 60

Usually, basketball is a game of runs, but Tuesday night, the score was close throughout the whole contest, as neither team led by more than seven points the entire game. In the first half, GCU was active and engaged, defending the entire length of the floor, and both teams were creating extra possessions through offensive rebounds. While GCU was ahead by a slim margin for the majority of the first half, Hillcrest took the lead with five minutes left and ended the half ahead, 43-41.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair. With seven minutes left, with Hillcrest up by six points, back-to-back inside scores – followed by a three-pointer by Jeremiah Crummie – gave the Lopes a one-point lead. As the game went down to the wire, Hillcrest capitalized on crucial Lopes’ turnovers and snuck away with the five-point victory.

“We had too many mental mistakes tonight,” said Lane. “Turnovers and selfish plays killed us, but we’ll get back to the drawing board and fix those issues.”

Tuesday: Ottawa 85, GCU Purple 73

Both teams’ offenses were electric to begin the game, mainly due to the scoring output of Lopes’ Steven Colvard and Ottawa’s Brady Johnson, who combined for 30 points in the first half. GCU’s defense was solid in the paint, but Ottawa cashed in six triples to take a 43-41 lead going into the break. The score stayed close in the second half until eight minutes left in the game when Ottawa pulled away.

“Both teams played a great game tonight,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Caleb Smith. “There were a few mistakes that we made, but it’s hard to beat a team when they’re shooting that well.”

All five Lopes teams will continue their home games on Tuesday, November 30 in the CAC. GCU White will face Ottawa University at 7 pm, while GCU Purple will play Benedictine University at 8 pm.
