Fabrice Tuyizere’s 24 points weren’t enough as the Grand Canyon University Men’s Club Basketball Team Black fell, 82-72, to Ottawa University Development in the opening round of the Arizona Men’s Basketball League (AMBL) Tuesday night at the Lopes Performance Center.
The loss puts an end to the Lopes’ season in the AMBL, a local, Arizona-based basketball league in its debut season.
The AMBL title game tips tonight in the Canyon Activity Center.
Tuyizere scored 17 of his team’s 24 points in the second half to keep GCU in it. Ottawa began to pull away late in the second half, and converted on its free throw shots down the stretch to ultimately win the game by a comfortable 10-point margin.
GCU scored 44 points in the first half, led by 16 points from Michael Wilhite. Tuyizere added seven of his 24 points in the opening half.
Wilhite finished with 20 points on the night.
Despite the playoff loss, GCU still has more basketball to play. The Lopes will suit up for the Region VI Naional Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Championship Series Basketball Tournament, hosted in the GCU Canyon Activity Center from February 28-March 1.
